I
was a grandmother at age 35. When my grandson, Shayne,
was three, my son brought him and his step-son, Chuck,
who was five, to live with us for a while. Being a
busy mom with a teenage daughter and a part-time job,
life got a little more complicated. As my strength
began to drain so did my patience. I felt ashamed when
my morning and evening prayers turned out to be whine
times instead of the joy times that come with praise,
thanksgiving and surrender. I didn’t know what I
needed, short of escape to some quiet little island.
But, as usual, God did.
That
year I was chairman of our Women’s Day of Fellowship
and our speaker for the occasion was a wonderful woman
named Donna Jean Wood. Of all the edification and
blessings we received that day, the most important
came when she shared her experience of having a prayer
partner. She told how they picked a particular day of
the week and lifted the other in prayer all day. They
gave each other a Scripture verse each week.
When
Betty and I met in the kitchen before the luncheon
started, we both knew immediately, we were to be
prayer partners. We were in perfect sync in our
prayers through the years for the needs of the church
ministries. The Holy Spirit spoke common words and
inspiration to us a number of times.
We
never socialized with each other except at Church
functions. But as we began our partnership we found
through our Scripture sharing and prayer requests that
our personal lives and spiritual needs ran parallel.
Betty was raising her granddaughter and in the process
of adopting her.
We
prayed for each other’s children and family and found
the verses each week were exactly on target for our
needs. Our burdens were lightened and our joys were
doubled by the sharing. It was exciting to see how the
Holy Spirit worked and weaved His guidance even for
unspoken needs.
Raising children and grandchildren is a ministry. And
in John 15:16 Jesus says He chose and appointed us to
go and bear fruit that will last. The Holy Spirit
brings forth His fruit (Galatians 5:22, 23) in our
lives as we minister in His name to our loved ones.
Then the Father will give us whatever we ask in Jesus
name.
A
mom’s daily and moment by moment prayers are the most
precious and powerful thing we can do for our
children. The gift of a prayer partner can not only
help strengthen you for your day, but it doubles the
power of your prayers.
If
you feel the stirrings of an” amen “in your mind or
heart when you read this, then God already has your
special partner prepared. Go ahead and ask God, then
look with expectancy. What are you waiting for?
