The
Greatest Servant of All
By Christy Burcham
For single moms
John 13:3-5
Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into
His hands, and that he had come from God and was going
to God,
rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took and
towel and girded Himself.
After that, He poured water into a basin and began to
wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the
towel with which He was girded.
Who is the greatest servant among you?
Probably,
if you are a mom reading this, this answer would be "I
am". This is true around my house anyway; I am the
cook, the valet, the chauffer, the maid, the tutor, the
nurse, the waitress, I am... sure you get the picture.
I mean, in 17 years of being a mom, I have washed a few
feet in my day. (noses, bumpkins, booties, etc.) It's
often times exhausting. Eventhough, you wouldn't trade
being a mom for the world. Don't you just wonder if
there is ever any rest for the weary???
Jesus said... come unto me all you who are weary and
heavy laden and I will give you rest.
Maybe this describes you this very moment. Especially,
my hat goes off to any single mom's. I was a single mom
for many years and you can add to that list above
mentioned the responsibility of the yard, all the bills
and financial decisions, not too mention making ends
meet every month, fix-it in the middle of the night,
exterminator, ok the list could go on. No ones
shoulders are really THAT BIG! Hug a single mom today,
send her an encouraging note, ask to pick dinner up for
her and the kids, offer to help with the yard, forward
this devotional web link to her. She needs your
encouragement!
The great news for us all is this, we have the strength
we all need, to be the servants we are called to be, in
Him. I have found that at the feet of Jesus is the
strength to carry on . So whether your a mom with one
child or a dozen, a single mom or married to prince
charming, maybe you are a mom who works outside the
home, or you homeschool, we all need Jesus on a day to
day basis to press on.
I can remember one time in particular when I was
pregnant with my fourth child, saying "Lord, I just
can't go on, I don't have any more strength, mine is all
gone." He said, "Good, that is what I have been waiting
to hear, now you can walk in My strength." It has made
all the difference. Every now and then we can all get
in our own strength trying to meet all of the needs of
others around us, and we have to come to the realization
once again, apart from Christ we can do nothing.
Let me leave you with one more thought, don't go
through the rest of your day without stopping and
allowing the greatest servant of all to minister to your
needs. He wants to, you know. Don't be self
sufficient like Peter and say, No Lord, you can't wash
my feet. Rather, realize your need. Come before him,
exhausted, weary, heavy laden, even if you feel you can
not go on, He will give you rest, and the strength you
need to be the greatest servant... in your house.
